Abstract

Control and distribution of intensity in training is of scientific and sporting interest. At present, there is no consensus on the most efficient intensities for achieving improvements in performance and health. Increasing evidence shows that the polarized model exerts a greater impact on physiological and performance variables in highly trained subjects however; we do not know its possible applicability to the health field. The objective of the review is to compile and synthesize evidence on the control of intensity and distribution of the polarized model. Pubmed and Web of science databases were reviewed between 2000 and 2016, incorporating the key words: polarized training; polarized training model; training intensity distribution, control intensity distribution. Evidence indicates that polarized training has reported significant improvements in performance and in physiological variables related to health compared to other types of distribution, so it is suggested to design exercise programs based on this model to be applied in various populations.
